ABSTRACT

The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is generally divided into three parts: stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The large intestine extending from the ileocecal junction to the anus is divided into three main parts: the colon, rectum, and anal canal. The important function of the colon is the creation of a suitable environment for the growth of colonic microorganisms, expulsion of the contents of the colon at an appropriate time, and potassium absorption, storage reservoir of fecal contents, and water from the lumen. The colon tissue generally contains the villi, lymph, nerves, muscle, and blood vessels (Sarasija and Hota 2000; Chourasia and Jain 2003; Kumar and Pratibha 2012). The anatomical features of the colon are displayed in Figure 6.1.
