ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces The Nanodatabase and analyses the uses of nanosilver in the European Union (EU). It explains how nanosilver is regulated in the EU when it comes to Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH), Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) and medical drugs and devices. The chapter elaborates on the challenges that nanomaterials present when it comes to regulation. It explores the main challenges to complete risk assessment of nanomaterials. The chapter discusses the test methods used to complete chemical risk assessment as well as alternative methods and tools that have been explored when it comes to nanosilver, namely NanoRiskCat and GreenScreenNano. The application of the GreenScreen framework resulted in the highest concern benchmark score owing to the aquatic toxicity of silver combined with the persistence and acute inhalation toxicity. The NanoRiskCat profile of silver is red, reflecting that there is an expected hazard when it comes to human health and the environment.
