ABSTRACT

Understanding monitoring and measurement is critical to the success of sustainability and a key component in helping an organization meet its strategic objectives. Measures are needed to guide the organization to the realization of its strategic objectives and mission statement. At each level of the organization, a family of measures is needed to create a complete picture of that level's strengths and weaknesses so that appropriate decisions can be made with the correct follow-up actions taken. Sources of data need to be reviewed on a regular basis to monitor their effectiveness and continual improvement in meeting changing organizational requirements. Measurement involves using different types of sampling and experimental controls. Sustainability results must be linked to activities, processes, systems, products, and services associated with the operation of the organization. An organization needs to have effective systems and processes for determining what data and information should be collected.
