ABSTRACT

Organizations are being increasingly pressured by their customers, the government, and their stakeholders to make a commitment to sustainability with its three responsibilities: environmental stewardship, social well-being, and economic prosperity in the community. Organizational theory provides a macro examination of people in the organization because it analyzes the organization as a whole. When assessing an organization's sphere of influence and determining its responsibilities, an organization needs to exercise "due diligence". The object of sustainability is to create a strategic focus on stewardship within an organization that will contribute to sustainable development. Resilience enables an organization to effectively deal with complexity and ambiguity, learn from experience, make investments in leadership and culture, and create stronger internal and external networks. Organizations, however, operate in an uncertain external environment that may affect the ability to meet their objectives. Objectives can be strategic, tactical, or operational.
