ABSTRACT
There are various types of atomizers used in spray drying and their details can be found in the Industrial Drying Handbook (Mujumdar 2014). For the discussion in this book, two broad types are classified: rotating atomizers and nozzle atomizers. Rotating atomizers encompasses atomizers, which utilize a rotating disc to atomize the droplets by imparting spin to the fluid. Some rotating atomizing plates utilize holes at the side of the rotating plate, whereas vanes are used in some designs. An important feature is that droplets are generated from the breakage of thin films of the feed material developed by the high-speed rotation.
