ABSTRACT

As the prevalence of childhood obesity has increased, so has our understanding of the relationship between adiposity and sleep disorders in children and adolescents. Obesity is associated with sleepdisordered breathing (SDB), daytime sleepiness, short sleep duration, and hypersomnolence disorders. These associations are complex, with evidence of bidirectional relationships between obesity and sleep disorders that are modified by age and other comorbidities. The focus of this chapter is to review the sleep-related consequences of childhood obesity, with a focus on SDB.
