ABSTRACT

Segmentation is a task necessary for a variety of applications in music analysis. In Chapter 17 we will find it useful to segment a piece of music into small single parts corresponding to notes in sheet music to allow, e.g., for later transcription. This particular kind of segmentation is typically called onset detection and may be based, e.g., on time-domain or frequency-domain features indicating the fundamental frequency f0 of a certain part of the tone (see Section 16.2).
