ABSTRACT

The failure times (left four columns) and service times (right three columns) in thousands of hours are given in Table 79.1 for aircraft windshields [1]. There were 153 observations: 88 were classified as windshield failures and the remaining 65 were the service times of windshields that had not failed at the times of observation. The windshields were comprised of several layers of material, including a very strong outer skin with a heated layer just below it, all laminated under high pressure and temperature. There were several categories of failure, including delamination, coating burn-out, outer-ply breakage, and accidental damage due to human and natural causes. Failures due to faulty installation and other nonusage failures were excluded from the data entirely. The two-parameter normal was found to provide a reasonable visual fit [1].
