ABSTRACT

The health benets of consumption of green coffee has been the subject of several studies. Coffee is a rich source of polyphenol caffeic acid. Here we present our ndings on the benets on brain health of consumption of green coffee and foods rich in caffeic acid and its derivatives. For example, caffeic acid and its derivatives, caffeoylquinic acid and its isomers, alleviate symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease by increasing the energy available to the brain and improving learning and memory in vivo. Moreover, the caffeic acid derivative rosmarinic acid has the antidepressant effect of modulating signaling in the brain, specically hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity. How pigment cells can be used to screen compounds for their neuroprotective effect is also discussed.
