Synopsis According to neo-Darwinian evolutionary theory, one-celled organisms cannot age. None of the standard theories describing how aging can evolve apply to yeast cells or Paramecia. Apparently, these microbes haven’t read the theory books. Programmed death seems to be as old as the cell nucleus, that is, about two billion years.
