ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the knowledge of the Antestia bugs' distribution, life history, natural enemies as well as their damage, role in coffee potato taste defect, economic impact, and control. It discusses the ecological range and distribution on coffee of the Antestia species, which are limited to Africa and Asia. Amongst the Pentatomidae, a group of species commonly known as Antestia bugs or, less frequently, "variegated coffee bugs", are important pests of coffee Arabica in Africa. The chapter considers the reasons why Antestia bugs have not been as successful as coffee berry borer in the colonization process of coffee plantations. Antestia bugs have been found on a wide range of plants from different botanic families. Morphology of Antestiopsis thunbergii adults is quite variable in size and coloration patterns in such a way that it is not easy to give an accurate description of the species.
