ABSTRACT
To successfully nd and develop geothermal systems, an understanding of their physical and chemical attributes is crucial. This chapter begins with a discussion of the thermodynamic considerations of water that govern how geothermal systems behave and how they are ultimately utilized. Important characteristics of liquidand vapor-dominated geothermal systems, in particular thermal manifestations and alteration of wallrocks, are then explored.
