ABSTRACT

Within the context of the issues covered in this book, relationships between symptoms and malfunctions are deterministic in nature, but stochastic in the way they are presented to us. As an example, if the generator (core) condition monitor-GCM (also known as the core condition monitor)—produces an alarm proven to be real, there is a definite and unique association with a specific faulty or degraded component, for instance, an overheated stator conductor. However, when the operator is presented with such an alarm, and without any other direct information, he/she can only guess the possible component(s) causing the alarm, from a number of components that may develop pyrolysis byproducts, such as core insulation, flux-shield insulation, the rotor winding, or the stator.
