ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the role of an electrical energy storage system (ESS) in a microgrid and the technical issues in the selection and integration of storage technology. The chapter begins with a brief overview of use cases for energy storage in a microgrid; how storage can be used when the microgrid is operating off-grid (islanded), and how it can be used when the microgrid is operating connected and in parallel with the larger power grid.
