ABSTRACT

Systems used in information processing at optical frequencies require a wide variety of photonic devices for generation and detection of photonic signals, for switching, modulation, and storing of information. Photonic devices are thus components for creating, manipulating, and detecting light. Most devices are of low power and therefore attempts are made to integrate them into photonic integrated circuits. Almost all photonic devices are manufactured and have evolved with semiconductor materials, therefore, it is necessary to introduce elements of semiconductor physics as the staring platform.
