ABSTRACT

The modern impetus in information communication with carrier waves at optical frequencies owes its origin to the invention and practical realisation of the lasers and optical fibres. As a result, today photonic communication is the most useful and advanced mode of information communication technology, fuelled by the ever-increasing demands of higher bandwidth [1]. This increasing trend, of the needs of large bandwidths, will continue in the future. In this chapter we shall use the term photonic communication instead of the commonly used optical communication (see Preface).
