ABSTRACT

In the process of successful implementation of all these paradigm shifts, power electronics will play an important role. Distributed energy resources (DERs) can include micro-turbines, fuel cells, wind power, solar power and several forms of energy storage. As electrical vehicles (EVs) can act as a load or storage, they are also categorized as DERs. Another switching technique employed in VSCs is the space vector PWM (SVPWM), in which switching vectors are generated by the states of the converter switches. This chapter illustrates the typical components of a photovoltaic (PV) generator. Two switching techniques, namely bipolar switching and unipolar switching, are used to turn ON and OFF the switches in the inverter. A static compensator (STATCOM) is a shunt device that also employs a PWM converter. Reactive power support from the wind farm varies with the active power generation (which is a function of the number of wind turbines in operation) and the voltage at the point of connection (PoC).
