ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors begin with the assessment phase of the Baseline, assess, suggest solutions, implement, check, and sustain (BASICS) model. There are three aspects they assess when looking at an assembly or machining cell. Those are the product— process flow analysis (PFA), the operator—work flow analysis and Setups—review changeovers and anything that has loading or unloading characteristics. To conduct a PFA analysis correctly, one has to become the thing going through the process whether it is a product, a patient in health care, a person in a government agency, or information. The high-level process map identifies steps at the highest level and is normally used as a starting point to grasp the process. The advantage of a high-level process map is it allows the users to see and agree on the big picture first prior to drilling down into the subprocesses.
