ABSTRACT

It is possible (and common) for an event to t within both categories. e most prevalent meteorological and hydrological hazards that occur in the United States include the following:

• Hurricanes • Storm surge • High winds • Torrential rain • Tornadoes • Waterspouts • Floods • Nor’easters • Severe winter weather • Freezing rain • Snowstorms • Blizzards • Windchill • Extreme cold • Drought • Heat wave • Hailstorms • Lightning storms • Severe thunderstorms • Fog • Avalanche • Sea level rise

In this chapter, we focus on the hydrological and meteorological hazards that occur most frequently throughout the country, have the highest probability of causing signicant damage to property, and pose the highest risk to human life and safety. e ultimate goal of learning about weather-related hazards is to be able to lessen their impacts on our communities through mitigation and preparedness activities that specically target the conditions in a particular area.
