ABSTRACT

Gait analysis has been used to great effect in palaeoanthropology in helping determine the anatomy and development of Early Man. Gait analysis has also attracted the attention of filmmakers, which, in addition to being educational, and part of the entertainment industry, has widened the audience and general understanding on ‘gait’. Biomechanics is a component of gait analysis, and the understanding of gait analysis assists the clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of a multitude of conditions, as well as in comprehending the impact of systematic disease on gait. A full body biomechanical assessment gives consideration to the many factors extrinsic to the foot which have a bearing on gait, including the lower limbs, knees, hips, pelvis and spinal positions; fixation and limitation of movements; upper limbs; shoulder and head position. Screening may also occur, particularly with those who have a family history of foot pathology or gait abnormalities.
