ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide a general overview of what is involved in video image analysis. The fewer the number of pixels in the image, the less fine detail appears on that image. To increase the storage capacity of the system, compression is applied to the images in order to reduce the amount of data required to store each image. Image enhancement using digital signal processing techniques has been used in forensic video since the early 1980s and for longer in military, medical and industrial applications with many of the techniques that were developed still having utility. The extent of any image analysis and the degree of confidence expressed in any conclusions is primarily dependent on the image quality. The facial image comparison tasks carried out by the image analyst consider all of the facial components and features that are available to view both generally and more specifically with subclass characteristics.
