Recovering Impressions in Snow
Snow impressions can be easily trampled or simply filled in by blowing snow or additional snowfall. One easy and successful method that can be used to increase the contrast of snow impressions is to highlight them with the application of colored sprays. When highlighting the impression, note side that any bright ambient lighting is coming from and apply the highlighting with the direction of the spray going in the opposite direction of that light. Snow print powder is a red powder that can be used with a fingerprint brush on wet melting or cold frozen snow or slush to coat the surface, allowing for more contrast during photography. Like casts in sand, those in snow add additional information beyond what can be recovered through photography and permit a higher comparative value. A cast will provide more confirmable dimensional information and typically better detail than photographic recovery alone.
