ABSTRACT

While much of this book has been devoted to field indicators of wetlands, signs of wetlands also may be observed on remotely sensed imagery (e.g., aerial photographs, digital imagery, and satellite imagery). Aerial photographs have been used for decades to identify wetlands and other natural resources for site-specific assessments and for producing thematic maps for wetland inventories and land cover/use surveys. Aerial photographs have been converted to digital images for onscreen interpretation using geographic information system (GIS) technology. Satellite imagery and other remotely sensed data are more recent sources of wetland type and distribution data.
