ABSTRACT

As pointed out in Chapter 1 and illustrated in Figure 1.3, environmental geotechnology is an interdisciplinary science that requires knowledge from other fields. The present knowledge of geotechnical engineering concepts and methods is not effectively analyzing soil behavior under various environmental conditions; therefore, a theory called the “particle energy field” has been introduced as a unified approach for analyzing soil behavior under various environmental conditions (Fang, 1989a and 1991a). A brief review of the fundamental concept and its applications to environmental geotechnology is presented as follows.
