ABSTRACT

As available ground resource in congested urban areas in Shanghai are scarce, excavations become much larger and deeper than before to maximize the land use as much as possible. In addition, more and more excavations have to be carried out in close proximity to existing structures. Therefore, it is of great concern to not only ensure the safety of excavation itself but to mitigate the effect of excavation on adjacent environment. The construction of an excavation would inevitably lead to significant influences on the deformation of adjacent tunnels. Several authors have presented field monitoring data and numerical analyses relating to excavation-induced influences on existing tunnels in Taipei Chang et al., 2001), Singapore Sharma et al., 2001) and Shanghai (Hu et al., 2003).
