ABSTRACT

This paper gives you an insight into the method of sustainable decision making. A number of practical examples show how this method is applied within ProRail, the Dutch inframanager. In the end it will be clear why it contributes greatly to the strategic objectives of ProRail to work efficiently and sustainable.

ProRail delivers a product in the interest of society. So it’s important that they operate transparently and efficiently and spend public money on matters of social importance. They also have to prove what the costs are to achieve a specific performance level. To achieve that level, it is not sufficient to consider the technical performance only. Economic and social aspects have to be regarded in decision making processes on maintenance, renewal and investments. With ProRail’s Life Cycle Management method scenarios can be compared with respect to economic and social aspects.
