ABSTRACT

Mental health in Malaysia is still in its infancy and confines to a very specialized and limited number of professional experts such as the psychiatrists, medical doctors and the clinical psychologists. As a result, mental health in Malaysia has not received the kind of attention it deserves, especially among cultural minorities (Haque, 2005). This phenomenon is found to be true for most of the developing countries (Mubbashar & Farooq, 2001) because of various causes including lack of knowledge or misconceptions about what mental health really is (Jorm, 2000).
