ABSTRACT

This chapter details what is required in terms of competencies, skills and knowledge from junior physicians in core medical training in clinical haematology, clinical immunology and oncology. Iron is an essential micronutrient, as it is required for satisfactory erythropoietic function, oxidative metabolism and cellular immune response. Haemochromatosis is an autosomal recessive disorder of iron absorption and metabolism resulting in iron accumulation. Iron deficiency states including diagnosis, causes and treatment. Anaemia of chronic disease (ACD) is a form of anaemia seen in chronic illness. Sideroblastic anaemia is a condition where red cells fail to completely form haem, whose biosynthesis takes place partly in the mitochondrion. This leads to deposits of iron in the mitochondria that form a ring around the nucleus called a ring sideroblast. Also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia is an autosomal dominant condition characterised by multiple telangiectasia over the skin and mucous membranes.
