ABSTRACT

The General Medical Council (GMC) was established under the auspices of the Medical Act 1858 and maintains the register of medical practitioners and the register of medical practitioners with limited registration. Limited registration is granted to overseas doctors and some from the European Economic Area for employment in a specific recognised training post, approved by the relevant Royal College and supervised by a registered medical practitioner. Doctors applying for limited registration need to check they have a primary medical qualification that the GMC accepts. Over 1600 overseas primary medical qualifications are accepted by the GMC. They include all the primary medical qualifications listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, published by the World Health Organization, and a number of others listed on the GMC website. British medical staff dress in a formal manner so men will need a selection of shirts and ties and women a range of smart, modest attire.
