ABSTRACT

Following counselling session eight, Steve explored more of this notion of emptiness, realising that it was very much that any part of himself that was not fully satisfied left him sensitive to feeling empty. He commented that it was hard for him to see anything as half-full, or even almost full; rather he was aware of the bit that was missing. It wasn’t something he was always aware of, but he noticed it as a kind of theme in his life. What developed from this was Steve making a list – his own idea – of all the experiences that he felt less than satisfied with, that could leave him with that sense of not being full, and started to consider how these were related to urges to eat. It wasn’t easy to differentiate; he was still experiencing a general overall urge to eat that was still very much the legacy from the session when he had so powerfully connected with those feelings of emptiness and sadness. Nevertheless, he persevered, and over the next few weeks, gained a great deal of insight into himself.
