ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the steps necessary to plan a support group suitable for women in the postnatal period. Starting a new group requires careful research and preparation, and may take a considerable amount of time. Before planning begins it is important to find out what is already available, and to identify any gaps in current service provision. A questionnaire is a quick, easy and cost-effective way to gain information from a large group of people that can be collated and used for future planning. Questionnaires can be distributed directly to potential client groups or via health professionals. Once the research confirms the need for the group, more detailed planning can begin. A mission statement will describe the aims and objectives of the group and encapsulate the intentions and ethos of the work. A funding application should demonstrate how the service fulfils client needs, and provide evidence to establish cost effectiveness of the service.
