ABSTRACT

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a strictly aerobic, oxidase-positive, non-motile rod which is subtyped by bacteriophage typing. It is a virulent ocular pathogen due to the copious amounts of enzymes it produces. These cause tissue damage and, via the action of β-lactamase, render many antibiotics ineffective. Additionally, all Pseudomonas species produce a water-soluble pigment, pyocin, that diffuses through growth media. Different strains produce different pyocins.
