ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a broad overview of the type of interventions available for the child with speech and/or language difficulties. It discusses the economic evaluation of intervention for communication difficulties. It is sometimes difficult for those familiar with trials methodology to feel confident when examining the intervention literature related to communication difficulties. The impact of an intervention is much more powerful if the child is able to take a skill taught in treatment and generalise it to other contexts both within the language system and to other environments. The length and intensity of intervention can be divided into three types: inoculation, dosage or nutritional. This type of intervention is of considerable interest because of the substantial effect sizes obtained in the original study. Indeed the effect sizes appear to be higher for children with primary speech and language delays than they are for interventions for children with more disabling conditions and those from adverse social environments.
