ABSTRACT

This chapter concerned with the type of relationship-building skills that can be used in every phase of the consultation – beginning, middle and end. It discovers the early rapport skills used in the initiating phase, but it is now time to build substantially on these, adding more depth and breadth, really getting to the heart of all good therapeutic relationships – in other words, sowing and cultivating the seeds of trust. The chapter talks about developing the skills and resources that can build relationships through good times and bad, and that can help to engage and deal more effectively with the presentation of illness whilst fostering a climate of mutual trust and understanding. There are a variety of different perspectives that the chapter explores continuing building of relationships. The authors have already discussed rapport at environmental and behavioural levels, and they can add to this further by looking at the other logical levels.
