Editor’s introduction When she was State Treasurer, former Texas Governor Ann Richards made the fol lowing remarks to the National Council on Alcoholism:
‘W hen I became worried about my drinking and actually got up the cour age to talk to my doctor about it, I said, ‘You know, I'm really concerned about how much I drink,’ and he said, ‘How m uch do you drink?’ Gearing up as best I could, I said, ‘I drink as m uch as three really big vodka martinis before d inner.’ And the doctor replied, ‘Oh well, you don’t have to worry about that. I drink tha t m uch.’ This tells us something about the medical profession and their attitudes’ (Richards, 1989).
