ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the values and ethical standards shared by all professionals who work together to help vulnerable children and families. It then looks at some of the codes of practice and standards governing the work of specific professionals. The chapter considers the implications of being a 'registered' professional held accountable by a regulating body, and of 'whistle-blowing' requirements. It ends by looking in more detail at two particular areas of practice that are central to collaborative working: record keeping, and the rules and dilemmas around the sharing of information provided in confidence. The chapter considers the ethical issues that arise and the values that must underpin both single-disciplinary and interdisciplinary practice. Children's practitioners value the contribution that a range of colleagues make to children and young people's lives, and they form effective relationships across the children's workforce.
