ABSTRACT

This chapter helps teachers to understand their natural teaching style and consider how to adapt it to various learners' needs to help them progress from being dependent to self-directed learners. The effective teacher empowers a student to want to learn more, to actually do so and to put their learning into practice. Teachers' appearance, voice and what they say are vitally important. Their gestures and body language should not be distracting, and should complement their voice and the messages of their teaching. The all-round flexible and adaptable teaching style fits well, as it motivates and guides interested and involved learners. The sensitive, student-centred teacher will craft their teaching to the various learning styles of a group of learners and the specific needs of individual learners, handling dependent learners as well as firing up self-directed learners. The all-round flexible and adaptable teacher will facilitate and encourage the freedom to study as independent learning, especially with more mature learners.
