ABSTRACT

This chapter helps teachers to choose the teaching method that will most efficiently achieve their learning objectives. Medical teachers are expected to demonstrate competence in a range of teaching methods and technologies. In healthcare, all types of learning are possible, including ad-hoc bedside or clinic sessions. Often learners ask for explanations relating to their experiences as they go along, and teachers must manage this situation without the luxury of prior research or preparation of visual aids. Surgical programmes may require learners to spend the initial months of their training acquiring and demonstrating competence in many of the basic technical skills in simulation labs before starting to work in the actual operating theatre. A learning group facilitator has to be especially skilled in group dynamics, as learning groups often consist of those who have already achieved a great deal in their own field and want to develop themselves and their ideas further.
