ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidelines for the non-professional carer and is intended to offer practical advice and ideas. Some people prefer being inside with a window open. Being short of breath or feeling weak can be a deterrent to anyone who normally enjoys fresh air and the slightest hill can seem like a mountain when one is breathless. If walking is a problem or breathlessness limits their exercise tolerance, one should think about borrowing a wheelchair and a portable ramp if necessary. The weakness of illness, the anaemia and exhaustion associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment can be so debilitating that the very thought of having to put on shoes and a jacket can be too much. Sometimes the fear of not being able to achieve the goal is quite overwhelming. A comfortable seat in the garden, even for a few minutes, might be enough to start with.
