ABSTRACT

This chapter contains clinical decision and action checklist in making ethical choices. Difficult decisions in clinical care often involve ethical issues. This does not mean that every difficult clinical decision must include an extensive review of the ethical issues involved, but it can be helpful to screen for ethical issues. A common starting point is the belief that there is no choice. In the US, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations mandates health care institutions to have a mechanism to resolve ethical issues. As a result, most institutions will have an ethics consultation team or ethics committee which is familiar with end-of-life decision making. If time is short, then waiting to see developments can make a decision clearer. Deciding whose interest links with which decision can make the best decision clearer. It is important to consider the effects of a course of action with regard to benefit, rights and professional issues.
