ABSTRACT

An individual may resist change because they: do not feel a need to change, do not see what is in it for them to change, do not understand the consequences of not changing, do not agree with the direction of change, do not feel able or competent enough to change, understand the change but fear the consequences of changing, have habits they are used to and will find difficult to break, and feel systems do not support the proposed change. Ideas can change the world, but only when coupled with influence: the ability to change hearts, minds and behaviour. Several vital behaviours should be focused on to bring about change, as well as all six sources of influence: personal motivation and ability, social motivation and ability, and structural motivation and ability.
