ABSTRACT

One definition of burnout is, 'A state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion caused by long term involvement in situations which are emotionally draining.' Characteristics of jobs with increased risk of burnout are: lack of control over work, lack of control over pace of work, frequent interruptions, doing a job you have not been adequately trained to do, and dealing with unpleasant, rude or angry people. It is important to be aware of the risk of burnout. Measures can be taken to reduce the risk of burnout and to help those already suffering from it. Clinicians have to use consultation models, and to develop professional interests different to main areas of expertise, e.g. dermatology, diabetes, teaching.
