ABSTRACT
Hunter-gatherer societies depended on hunting wild animals and collecting nuts, fruit and berries for food. It was only with the development of agriculture that the requirement for labour emerged. Agriculture then tied mankind to the land and imposed a discipline on the active members of society to ensure that cultivation was sufficient to support greater populations than had been possible for hunter-gatherer societies.
