ABSTRACT

For most practices, however, activities of this kind have only recently been introduced, stimulated by General practitioners (GPs) and practice managers who see organization and its management as a means of enabling everyone in the practice to work more effectively in the interests of patient care and of their own health and enjoyment. This chapter is based on workshops held during the autumn and winter of 1993/4. At that time, the mood of both GPs and practice managers varied considerably. The manager was given the task of reviewing all aspects of this practice's organization. The role described here is that being performed by some practice managers and aspired to by some others. It is genuinely managerial in that it is about managing change. It was assumed that administrators were those who created and sustained smooth running working environments for others, whether these were politicians or doctors.
