ABSTRACT

As Dave left the session, Alan reflected on the journey so far. Dave had been through a lot. He had achieved much. He had managed a dry Christmas and New Year, and that was no mean feat in a culture that associated this time of year so strongly with alcohol. He was gaining a great deal of self-insight, too, and was learning to become much more part of the family. He was looking to develop new interests, and hopefully new friends would develop out of that, building his confidence. Of course, nothing is ever certain when dealing with an alcohol habit. Dave had experienced lapses and knew how fast the urge to drink could cut in, and how irresistible it felt. These might well arise again, and only time would tell whether Dave would be able to make other choices in those crucial moments.
