ABSTRACT

Leadership extends to visualizing the relationship of the individual business to the overall context, the community and the political, social and economic forces of the nation as a whole. The role of leadership is inevitably closely related to the role of management. All managers, irrespective of their level of management, need to have leadership skills that will allow them to build a team out of individuals and to develop those individuals within that team in order to achieve the relevant tasks. General practitioners generally find the concept of leadership, or perhaps more importantly followship, a difficult one with which to identify. The evidence is that the efficiency of highly directive leadership is very questionable. Increasingly attention is being paid to the problems of motivation and human relations. Leadership today has to be tempered by the fact that employees resent being treated as subordinates.
