ABSTRACT

A practice's managers have a primary responsibility to use a practice's human resources effectively. Establishing a learning culture in any organization starts at the top. In a modern practice the costs of training and development are considerable in terms of course and training fees and loss of remunerated time to the practice, and also in terms of disturbance and stress on those covering for the person being trained. The training and continuing professional development of all staff need to be coordinated and focused. Good training and good continuing education go hand in hand with personal development. The UK Central Council for Nursing, Health Visiting and Midwifery (UKCC) has recently introduced new arrangements for Post-registration Education and Practice (PREP) of all nurses. Investment in training and continuing education has been introduced only recently, when health authorities began to recognize the need for more effective support.
