ABSTRACT

All businesses need to have insurance cover and a dental practice is no exception. In the majority of cases, fire insurance of property is index-linked but it is essential to ensure that the starting base is correct otherwise the indexation is of doubtful value. Most motorists will, however, have a fully comprehensive insurance, which will cover against repairs to the insured's own vehicle as well as that of the third party. An 'all risks' policy will cover the contents against damage from fire and extends to accidental damage through to, perhaps, dropping a piece of equipment accidentally. The use of X-ray equipment in the surgery is in itself a serious risk and the general dental practitioner will need to insure against accidents to staff and patients alike through radiation. Pressure vessels such as compressors, autoclaves and transportable gas containers, eg oxygen cylinders, should be regularly serviced and maintained to comply with current Health and Safety legislation.
