ABSTRACT

Practice managers have a crucial role to play in the educational activities of general practice, not only because of their organizational and management skills but also because of the unique position they hold within the primary health care team. This chapter discusses the importance of continuing education for all members of the primary health care team and underlined the essential role played by the practice manager. It outlines some educational concepts in relation to primary care. The chapter discusses ways in which the educational needs of teams and individuals can be identified. It explores the methods of learning and teaching available. The chapter describes the educational networks that presently exist within the health service. It identifies the skills and resources required to plan and manage the educational activities of a practice. Outside speakers with particular expertise can be invited to address members of the primary health care team on subjects of particular interest.
