The individual experiences a barrage of conflicting emotions that can lead to emotional turmoil. In the healthcare setting, it is considered good practice not to show emotion. Hospitals holding cancer status should provide guidelines for healthcare professionals who are communicating bad news. Remember, the patient may have waited for a number of days for investigation results and will want access to all the information relating to the diagnosis. The preparation should include repeating the history of what has been happening to the patient. The professional is a useful resource for the patient and family.
